Diagnosis of Male Infertility

Infertility is the inability of a person to reproduce by natural means. It is a worldwide issue between couples from all races and places. A few years ago, the word infertility was only used to describe for women who were unable to conceive as well as being unable to carry a pregnancy to full term. When a couple did not bear children, it was the female who was blamed and held accountable. Perhaps maybe back in the days, there were no tests available.

However in recent years the researchers have proved that even men can become infertile and they are to be equally blamed as women. In today’s world infertility affects approximately 7% of all men. For this reason, the search for causes of infertility between couples usually begins with the male because the examination and testing of infertility in males is less complicated.

Male infertility is commonly due to deficiencies in the semen, and better quality of semen is used as a surrogate measure of male fecundity..

Let us ponder over the tests that can be conducted to find out whether a male is infertile or not:

Sperm Count: The most general way is to check for the sperm count. The average sperms should be nearly 20 million per milliliter of semen. Males below 15 million quantities are infertile and needs a different way to give birth to a child.

Testis Biopsy: A tissue from the male’s private organ is taken and tested in labs to check for the existing infertility. However, it can only be conducted if the semen does not contain any sperm. That means, when the semen is dry and hormonal level is balanced, testis biopsy can be conducted.

Doppler Flow Study: Ultrasound and Doppler flow study of scrotum to look for any varicocele, any duct obstruction or any hydrocele.

DNA fragmentation test is also conduct to look for any defects in the sperm morphology.
