Hysteroscopy and When to get it done

The technique of having the doctor view the lining of the uterus.In this procedure, the doctor inserts a small diameter device called the hysteroscope into the uterus. The device is fitted with a camera and light which allows imaging.


Procedure

The general physician recommends a specialist for this procedure.  It is done similar to gynecological examination with your feet up in stirrups. A speculum is used to spread the cervix. The hysteroscopy device is inserted through the vaginal opening and continues to move it through the cervix and into the uterus.  Carbon dioxide or a liquid is sent through it into the uterus to widen it and clear the surface. With the help of light and imaging equipment, the uterus and fallopian tubes can be seen, issues can be diagnosed.  Surgical procedures can be performed.

In case a surgery is being performed, surgical devices are also inserted through the hysteroscope.  The procedure should not be painful. But there could be cramping during the procedure.  The doctor usually gives sedative before the procedure to keep the patient relaxed. The procedure usually takes 5 to 30 minutes.

Who Needs to Have a Hysteroscopy Done?

Hysteroscopy is done usually for diagnostic purposes.  Some of the patients who might need it are

  • Women with abnormal bleeding or cramping. By using preheated tools, doctors can stop the bleeding.
  • Hysteroscopy might have to be done to detect if there is any problem in the uterus or scar tissue to identify the cause of infertility.
  • Hysteroscopy is used to determine the cause of several miscarriages and IUD removal and misplacement are also diagnosed.
  • It can help in detecting endometrial cancer.
  • Problematic areas in the uterus can be removed by the use of preheated tools and it is called an endometrial ablation.

Hysteroscopy is done to identify if any surgeries or long-term treatments need to be done.  The risks of performing hysteroscopy are pretty low and recovery is also fairly quick. There are no effects that last beyond a couple of days once the procedure is done. Diagnosis done using this method is also fairly accurate.
