Knowing the Difference between Urinary Tract Infection and Vaginal Yeast Infection

Each and every woman has to face both of these infections at least once in their lifetime. Even though these two infections are totally different in nature, but their symptoms occur in the same general area. Due to this reason, it is often quite difficult to differentiate between them, which can often lead to wrong medical treatment.

What Is UTI?

UTIs are a type of infection that is caused by microbes and can affect any part of your urinary tract. It mostly occurs in the lower track which consists of the ureter and bladder but in rare cases, it also affects the upper tract consisting of the urethras and kidneys. The UTIs which affect the upper tract are rare compared to the ones affecting the lower tract but are also more serious in nature. Some of the causes of UTI are:-

• Holding on to urine and not emptying your bladder
• Using spermicidal during sex

What Is Vaginal Yeast Infection?

Vaginal Yeast Infection also is known as Candidacies is a type of infection that is caused by the disruption of the balance between the bacteria and yeast present in a vagina. This change in balance often allows the yeast cells to grow. Even though it spreads with sexual contact, it isn’t considered as a sexually transmitted disease. The main reason behind this is that it can happen to women who aren’t sexually active and once you get a yeast infection, it is most likely you will get it again in the future. Some of the causes of Vaginal Yeast Infection are:-

• Use of medications like birth control, antibiotics, and steroids
• High levels of blood sugar
• Use of garments which create moisture in the vaginal area
• Changes in hormones

The Connection between UTI And Vaginal Yeast Infection?

It is commonly seen that women tend to get Vaginal Yeast Infection right after Urinary Tract Infection. The main reason behind this is the antibiotics that are used to treat UTI. Even though these antibiotics cure the UTI they destroy the pH balance of the vagina, which in turn leads to vaginal infection.

Treatment for UTI and Vaginal Yeast Infection

Both of these infections are easily curable. Antibiotics are the usually prescribed choice of medicine by Doctors for UTI. Few days of antibiotics will give you relief from the symptoms of UTI, but you need to complete the entire course of medicine to prevent UTI from returning.

Whereas for Yeast infections you will be prescribed with anti fungal medications, but the time required for complete recovery and the amount of dose may vary.
