Does use of contraceptive methods affect fertility?

Fertility is a natural capability of living beings. As humans, we use different contraceptive methods to prevent pregnancy. We plan for our young ones according to our health, family, financial status, etc.

Contraception is well known as Birth control or Fertility control. When we use these birth control methods or devices, we have a lot of questions in our mind.

“Does this contraceptive method affect my fertility?  Is it possible to conceive later?”

The answer is partially yes, as it will affect our future fertility because it depends on the use of contraceptive method or devices that are used to prevent pregnancy.

One should know the usage of contraceptive methods and their effects. Let’s have a look in detail.

1. The Pill

It is a contraceptive pill which is taken orally by women. It is a combination of hormones called estrogen and progesterone. There will be no effect on fertility because the fertility returns to whatever level it would be before the usage. Women can conceive after the stop of pills. It doesn’t affect but the most recommended time period is to wait for 2-3 months to conceive in-order to monitor the duration of menstrual cycle.

2. Intrauterine devices (IUD)

IUD is a T-shaped birth control device which is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. IUD prevents sperms to reach the ovulated egg but they provide no protection against STI’s. It is not recommended mostly as the removal of IUD may cause heavy periods in some women. The effect on fertility is less and it comes back to normal level of women after the stop of its usage.

3. Depo-Provera

It is a contraceptive method taken in the form of injection which works up to 12-14 weeks. It is 99% effective and  in some women it may lead to effect the fertility by irregular periods and other side affects like weight gain, unwanted facial and body hair, hair loss etc.

4. Male or Female condoms

Male or Female condoms are a barrier method which are used on the body during sexual intercourse. This is the best contraceptive which is used and most effective one to prevent pregnancy. It doesn’t affect the fertility and most of the people use this easy method.

5. Contraceptive Implant

It is a long term contraception which is used for 3 years on an average. The implant contains progesterone which is placed just under the skin of upper arm under doctor supervision. Implant is to be removed after completion of three years as the effectiveness is high which leads to dangerous problems.

6. Emergency contraception

Emergency contraception is a pill taken in the morning within 24 hours to prevent pregnancy. It is not mostly a recommended one. It is used only when you have unprotected sex during your ovulation time and there is a chance to conceive.

Not only the usage of contraceptive methods you choose will affect the fertility, you should also follow some healthy habits such as eating healthy foods, stop smoking and reduce the intake of alcohol especially when you are under medication.
