Is it better to have extra embryos for In-Vitro Fertilization

In-Vitro Fertilization is an important form of conception that is advocated these days. It is effective for couples who are unable to conceive even after prolonged efforts. Since it is a sort of last resort for some, they believe that having extra embryos will increase the chance of positive fertilization. Numbers become extremely important. No one is sure about how many oocytes will fertilize or how many embryos will be formed. Even though the rule says that only one is enough, most people believe that multiple embryos improve the chances manifold. Therefore, it is imperative to look into this matter in detail.

Why do some people keep multiple embryos?

As mentioned before, it is a fact that only one embryo is sufficient for In-Vitro Fertilization. However, many couples opt for multiple embryos for many reasons.

Firstly, it is about being safe with a higher number. The more the number of embryos, the more are the chances of having a healthy baby out of it. Secondly, if a couple wants to have more babies in the future, they would not want to undergo another IVF cycle. Instead, generating multiple embryos and freezing them could be a viable option for it. Last but not least, as a woman ages, the quality of their egg reduces. The possibility of a good pregnancy also diminishes. If multiple embryos are kept from the time of maximum fertility, this problem can be suitably addressed. It also gives mental peace to the couple in case a pregnancy fails at an advanced stage. They will feel assured that there are more embryos available.

What are some issues with extra embryos?

Multiple embryos can be properly utilized when they are cryopreserved in suitable containers. It has worked for many couples as they could have multiple babies from the formation of embryos at a single time. However, there are some associated problems with cryopreservation which are as follows-

  • The laboratories offering storage of embryo must meet the minimal requirement and standards of quality and safety.
  • Couples take it as a responsibility to give life to the extra embryos as well. This can cause problems in the unprecedented family size.

What option do most couples take?

The answer is highly varied. However, most couples choose to give life to the extra embryos. Some take the easy way out by keeping the embryos in storage for a year, which makes it a decision for later. In the same manner, the couples who are not planning to extend their family have the option of embryo donation. The use of donated embryo can be considered by women with untreatable infertility reasons.
