Thyroid Disease- A Leading Cause of Infertility around the World

The thyroid gland is one of the most important glands in the body that secretes the thyroid hormones. The hormone is crucial for the proper development and functioning of the body any discrepancy in it can lead to different types of issues. One of the major issues seen with respect to the imbalance of the thyroid hormones in the body is infertility. Even though it is an impending problem for both genders, it has been routinely noticed that females are more affected by it. What Do You Mean By Infertility? 

Infertility is the inability to procreate offspring leading to problems with the furthering of the generation.  Whenever there is an increase in the levels of thyroid hormone, it can lead to infertility with almost 2.6 percent of the total numbers suffering from it. It is seen more commonly in women and if the right type of intervention is not given at the correct time, it can cause infertility related aspects and can also leads to abortion.

Hypothyroidism and Its Effects

 It is not only the increase in thyroid hormones that can cause infertility. The perspective of having decreased levels of thyroid hormones should also be added along with the normal and increased one. Even though it is highly uncommon with only 0.5 percent, but it can also cause the abortion, preterm birth, IUGR and BOD (Bad obstetric history) so the role of hypothyroidism cannot be overlooked.

Can It Affect Males?

 Even though thyroid-related disorders can cause infertility, it is a problem that is generally seen in females rather than males. However, even if there is an outside chance that a male can face the problem of infertility, it is mainly in the form of reduced ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, and low sperm count.
