WHAT IS ICSI?

ICSI refers to Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, which can be used as a part of IVF treatment. The procedure was introduced in 1992 and since then has become the most successful technique to treat male infertility problems. For ICSI, only one sperm is required for per egg technique, which gets injected directly into the egg. ICSI these days is used for nearly 50% of all IVF treatments.

With ICSI, sperms need not travel to egg or penetrate egg to fertilize it. It is thus a helpful procedure for couples in which male partner has an irreversible vastectomy, very low or no sperm count, or male partners with low quality sperm counts. During the procedure, the female partner is given fertility drugs to stimulate ovaries to develop several mature eggs for the purpose of successful fertilisation.

WHAT IS IMSI?

IMS or Intracytoplastic Morpholigically Selected Sperm Injection is similar to ICSI with the exception of being able to see the sperm at 6000x magnification in contrast to the 600x with ICSI. Digital magnification thus helps to see the sperms clearly at very high magnification. This procedure thus helps the fertility specialists to be able to identify defects of the sperms that might not be visible with conventional ICSI.

Who can benefit from IMSI?

IMS is particular suitable for:

• Men with very poor sperm morphology, very high levels of abnormal sperm count.
• Couples with previously failed ICSI cycles.
• Men with elevated sperm DNA fragmentation levels.
